Life feeling heavy? Balance it out with eternity
I had a thought recently that it would be so cool, for a little while, to throw myself into something that didn't mean anything, to invest wholeheartedly in a creative project that has no bearing whatsoever on life as I know it.
I envied the work of authors like Liz Gilbert who spend years researching a niche piece of history to write a novel. How indulgent! How enjoyable! To play with something that means nothing and be able to set it aside freely.
Then I remembered, I'm the one making all the things I do mean something.
There’s a lens through which stakes don’t exist. Where I get to choose whether what I'm creating means as little as researching something trivial or is as high profile as saving the world.
What negates the existence of stakes?
Eternity.
When you zoom out far enough… you realize you’re so much more than this limited experience. You’ve done it all before. Everything that has happened and will happen, is already happening.
I believe I chose this facet of existence, this corner of reality, because it's the experience my Soul wanted to have (instead of being everything, everywhere, all at once) but it doesn't mean I'm stuck here.
Just like escaping the earth's atmosphere means I can float, the weight of my experience dissipates in the vastness of time and space.
The belief that anything I’m doing is a matter of life and death evaporates when I realize I’ve been born and died an infinite number of times.
I struggle sometimes with the illusion of scarcity, it feels like the culture is set up to remind us we're limited (and hey, maybe that's another genius invention to incentivize us to make the most of this reality) but when life feels heavy and overwhelming and, like right now, I feel like I have to get everything perfect, I remind myself…
balance it out with infinity.
How could I feel rushed about something I've got forever to figure out? Feel trapped by something I've already broken free of? How could I be weighed down by anything, when my Soul has always been, and will always be, connected to everything?
